City Tours & Hot Fuzz Film Location Tours
Please note that there will not be a city tour on Sat 15th June 2013. We apologise for any inconvenience.
Wells takes its name from the springs in the grounds of the 13th century Bishop's Palace. As you stroll by the moat you will see the swans, the ancient gatehouse with drawbridge, and some of the millions of gallons of water that come from the springs and flow into the River Sheppey.
You will stand on Cathedral Green and see the spectacular West Front of one of the finest Cathedrals in the country, where pilgrims have walked for centuries. You will walk through the ancient medieval precinct, along the cobbled street of Vicars Close (the oldest continually inhabited street in Europe) and see the second oldest working clock in the world.
The Market Place is steeped in history and yet is full of the everyday life of the 21st Century. Find out about what has taken place here over the years, how the water from the springs was given to the people of Wells, and how community life is celebrated here now.
You can book an extended city tour. You will see the oldest almshouses in Somerset, St Cuthbert's Church, and what remains of The Priory of St John. You will learn about the history of our economic growth and how Wells prospers in the 21st century.
City tours run on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11am, from Easter to the end of September. These last approximately 1 hour. Simply turn up at The Crown, no booking required.
Tailor-made city tours can be booked throughout the year at a time and on a day to suit you. Please discuss your requirements with a guide when you book, e.g. extended / standard city tour.
